Episode 110: Amalgamation
Written By Karl White
The Rooted Ones gathered around Bess Bishop in silence. Each remembering back. They were a tribe of shamanistic exiles. Venturing into new lands, encountering storms. Starving and desperate, they called upon the Mother Spirit for salvation. She answered with the Shifting Ritual. They hunted the Dire Wolf killing it, honoring the sacrifice by consuming every part of the beast, flesh to bone. Then came the agony. Hunger gave way to transformation, and the Wolf Tribe was born. As their elemental gifts awakened, they again conjured the Mother Spirit, who charged them with a divine purpose: spread their bloodline until one day the Bearer of Light would be born. Their powers sustained them through the ages, yet for millennia the circle remained incomplete. But, at last, the missing element lay before them.
Like an instinct, they knew what needed to be done...Kur started. Fire rose from his hands, not wild or destructive, but controlled. Maer followed, placing both palms against the ground as the earth beneath the camp answered with a low, resonant hum. Rhod closed his eyes and summoned the wind, drawing it into a spiraling current that moved gently around the gathered tribe. Sof lifted his hands toward the night sky, pulling moisture from the air until shimmering droplets hung suspended like stars. Xaron released a deep tone from somewhere within herself, and the sound rippled outward in visible waves, steadying the elements as they began to move as one.
At the center of it all, Bess stirred. The Light within her responded...rising from her chest in a soft golden glow, faint at first, then brightening as the other elements bent towards it. Fire arced through the air. Stone and soil lifted from the ground in weightless fragments. Wind circled faster. Water turned in silver ribbons. Sound trembled through the clearing, not heard so much as felt within the bones and blood of every living soul present. One by one, the elements reached for the Light. And the Light reached back.
From the edge of the encampment, Orem and Joseph silently watched. Joseph remained weakened from the battle, but what he’d harvested from Bess he could feel the staggering depth of her elemental power. And what unfolded before them was more than magic. It was life recognizing its own reflection after an age of separation. Answering a summons woven into the fabric of Creation long before mankind first walked the Earth.
The Rooted Ones began to rise from the ground. Lifting effortlessly until they hovered in a perfect circle around Bess. Each radiated the ancient force entrusted to them. Bess rose last, still unconscious yet brilliant with Light, drawn upward by the power within her.
Beneath the stars, the six figures floated together as the elements intertwined, no longer existing as separate forces, but as fragments of something greater waiting to be made whole.
Then the boundaries between them began to dissolve. Fire flowed through Earth without burning it. Wind carried Water without scattering it. Sound gave shape to Light. And Light gave purpose to everything it touched. The human forms within the circle became indistinct, becoming a presence. A new being formed above the encampment. The elements binding together as one.
And in that moment, Death appeared. He stood at the boundary of what was happening, silent and still, watching the being take form beneath the stars. He’d come because another Procession had been enacted. Another milestone fallen into place. Another door opened on the long road toward the final war. But Death didn’t interfere. He merely observed, as he always had, bearing witness to the shape of fate as it unfolded. Another figure appeared beside him...Kasson.
The demon observed with quiet satisfaction. Waiting for the moment to complete itself. Knowing the prophecy had to reach its end before it could be taken...Orem understood that as well. He waited until the elemental consciousness was complete, and this supreme being, the Amalgamation was fully born. Only then did he move.
From the periphery of the camp, Orem raised both hands and unleashed the full-force of his Dark power. The attack did not strike the being from outside. It entered through the seams between the elements. The radiant being shuddered as Orem’s magic threaded through it like black veins spreading beneath luminous skin. For one desperate moment, the Amalgamation resisted, erupting in blinding brilliance as though the essence of Creation struggled against corruption. But Orem didn’t relent, as this was his destiny.
The Amalgamation writhed above the camp as Orem forced himself deeper into its being. His body rose from the earth, drawn upward while his magic burrowed ever farther into the elemental consciousness. The vast celestial form folded inward around the magician like a dying star collapsing upon itself. The night exploded in blinding radiance as Fire, Earth, Wind, Water, Sound, and Light were torn from the Amalgamation and drawn into Orem Black. Then everything went still.
Orem fell to the ground, his body withering beneath the weight of the power he’d taken. The transformation pushed even him beyond his limits. Recovery would take time. Kasson smiled. The prodigy, who he tempted and steered, leading through a winding maze of purpose, had finally done it. Orem, once a mortal man, was now The Arcanox. The most magically gifted being to ever walk this Earth.
KASSON: Rest Orem. The shine of pain will wear. And what will emerge will be unstoppable--
But Kasson quieted as Orem began to convulse. His body trembled violently against the earth, while flashes of elemental power flickered wildly beneath his skin. Something was terribly wrong. That’s when Kasson noticed Joseph, standing several feet away, hands outstretched, as streams of energy poured from Orem into the Harvester.
Kasson tried to stop him, but an impossible force prevented him from acting. He struggled, unable to do anything but watch as Joseph used the very gift the demon had bestowed upon him for the purpose it’d always been designed to serve. The unimaginable power Orem only just acquired left him dangerously exposed. The immense strain of becoming the Arcanox weakened him, creating a brief moment in which Joseph recognized the opportunity...and seized it.
Rivers of supernatural energy flowed from Orem's body. The power of the Amalgamation, along with Orem's own magic, streamed into Joseph. This wasn’t about ambition, or a desire for greater power, it was survival. Ever since Orem's return from Oblivion, Joseph lived with the certainty vengeance was coming. If he allowed this moment to pass, there’d never be another. This was the only chance he’d ever have to stop the man he’d once betrayed.
Orem screamed. The sound echoed across the open range. And a moment later, he was dead.
Joseph staggered. The power flooding through him was beyond comprehension. Every instinct told him to release it. To let it go before it tore him apart. Yet, he didn’t.
Kasson finally broke free of whatever unseen force that had been exerted over him. He gave a sharp look to Death, with an expression burning with fury. The ancient entity had always been impartial, an observer bound to witness the fulfillment of Fate rather than interfere with it.
DEATH: A Procession has been met, but your marvel is no more.
KASSON: What did you do?!
Death offered no reply. He simply vanished from the earthly plane, leaving Kasson standing alone in stunned disbelief and mounting rage.
This was never meant to be part of the plan. Orem Black had been the culmination of centuries of manipulation. The chosen vessel. Meant to carry out what remained to be done. He was supposed to be the Spellbinder, charged with bringing the Dark Army forth when the time came. He was supposed to be an agent of violence and chaos in the battle for the end. He was supposed to help Kasson reveal his final form as the Behemoth...
Instead, Orem lay dead on the ground, and only Joseph Frost remained. He possessed power unrivaled, yet lacked everything that made Orem indispensable. The understanding, the discipline, the centuries of study. He didn’t have the mastery required to wield such extraordinary power as it’d been intended.
The loss was devastating, but not fatal. Orem had been the ideal candidate. Joseph would simply have to become that. Maybe with enough time, enough instruction, and enough discipline, he could still be what Kasson required.
The path had changed, but the destination had not.
