Episode 118: Where All Roads Lead
Written By Karl White
In the Last Valley, Joseph Frost stood at the fulcrum of creation, forcing two worlds towards one another. The work of the Spellbinder wasn’t just opening a gateway. It was binding together two realities never meant to touch. Every inch the Abyss advanced required Joseph to overcome the natural order of existence itself. Once the planes converged, he’d have to hold them together against their relentless instinct to separate. It demanded extraordinary precision, inexhaustible power, and the strength to endure an unimaginable strain.
In the Abyss, Banerjee felt the worlds shifting. He, Aolani and the others, took their place at the weakest spot they’d found in the void.
Across the earthly realm, the atmosphere began to deteriorate. Darkening skies spread across the Northern Hemisphere as though creation could no longer withstand the opposite polarity of two realities being drawn together.
Those gifted in magic felt the disturbance first. The practitioners of the Order of Wormwood sensed reverberations in the thin barrier between worlds. There was no longer time for preparation. By teleportation, the forces of the Light converged upon the Last Valley, assembling beneath the darkening sky to face whatever awaited. This is where all roads would lead.
They moved immediately to stop Joseph, but the Spellbinder anticipated the attempt. He had cast a protection spell, fortifying himself and the growing breach from any outside assault.
Veera Sarin organized the ranks of the Order, while Sara Ivy, Renmaru Okayama, Heng Shao, and Flora Mae Watkins with her assembled Nightwardens, took their places across the valley. There was nothing left to do but wait as destiny unfolded before their eyes.
Beyond the battlefield, Satan manifested upon a hilltop nearby in a burst of living fire. His appearance wasn’t that of any sort of hoofed and horned beast. His physical form was more of something once divine and ethereal pulled from a fire, skin stained with smoke and sulfur. Once the Architect of Morality, he was charged with crafting the perfect balance between right and wrong. But the invention of free-will shattered that balance. He rebelled, and was cast down. Standing at the precipice of ascending once again to restore balance to the Universe, he watched.
Death observed as well, from a further vantage point. A silent witness, the Keeper of Universal Law, there to bear witness to the final battle, ensuring the ancient principles governing creation remained unbroken.
Then, at last, the barrier between worlds became one. The horizon split apart with a mighty sound, as creation itself had been unstitched from end to end. What first appeared as a distant fissure widened with terrifying speed until the breach stretched across the breadth of the valley, swallowing the skyline in an impossible wound of crimson light and endless darkness.
Beyond it lay not another landscape, but the Abyss itself. Countless shapes stood waiting within the blackness, extending farther than sight could measure. Demons, corrupted souls, horrors older than mankind, filled the void in numbers beyond comprehension. The bridge was complete. The gates to the underworld had opened.
Before any legions advanced, one figure crossed the threshold ahead of them all -- Kasson. The immeasurable power he'd harvested from his Spirit-Bound children, had long outgrown the form carrying it. His body had become little more than a vessel straining beneath a force never meant to be held.
The instant his feet touched the earth, that vessel began to fail. Kasson staggered only a few steps before collapsing, as violent convulsions overtook him. Tendrils of black Brimstone poured from every seam of his body, wrapping around him in layer after layer until the demon disappeared beneath a pulsating cocoon of living darkness. The thing throbbed with impossible power, each pulse rippled through the valley, as though whatever struggled inside had begun rewriting its own existence. Kasson had reached a threshold no demon ever crossed. Whatever was to emerge from that black chrysalis would no longer belong to any of the known orders of Hell.
Far beyond the breach, hidden within the deepest reaches of the Abyss, Banerjee's company gathered at a deep fracture in the void. The moment had come. They’d form a circle, Banerjee, Aolani, Gérard Roux, John Dee, Fulcanelli, Heinrich Khunrath, St. Germain...along with Bhekizizwe, Herakles, and Ambrose Bierce. Those three had no magic abilities, but would act as conduits to help amplify the power. There was nothing left to say among them, only work to be done.
One by one they let their magic answer. Each practitioner drew inward, swelling with rich power normally flowing through them. Holding it, their bodies became weapons, containing more energy than flesh was ever meant to endure. The stale air around them trembled. Light seeped through their skin in faint fractures. The ground vibrated beneath the mounting tension as the impossible weight of restrained magic continued to build.
Banerjee could feel the power amplifying. Every breath, every heartbeat brought them closer to the critical threshold. Those gathered became a collective energy, pushing to the point of no return. A star waiting to go supernova.
He looked to Aolani. She answered with the smallest of smiles. It was time. Together...they stopped holding back.
On Earth, the Four Pillars: Deception, Hate, Delusion, and Suffering, raised their hands. At their command, Satan's Generals gave the order to advance, and the first ranks of the Dark army surged through the great breach towards the waiting forces of the Light.
They’d scarcely marched a hundred paces when it happened. A piercing resonance rolled from deep within the Abyss.
Every demon instinctively turned towards the darkness behind them. And there, deep within the void, a single point of brilliant white light appeared...
The Abyss exploded. A wave of blinding radiance tore through the ancient realm, racing across the blackness with impossible speed. The shockwave caught the rear of the Dark army in an instant, vaporizing entire legions before they could even turn to flee. Mountains of broken stone erupted as the ancient foundations of the forgotten world began collapsing.
Fractures raced through the void in every direction, each one widening until vast sections folded inward, crushed beneath the weight of something profound. Then, the Abyss didn’t break apart, it simply imploded.
The bridge between worlds convulsed violently. Joseph staggered as the collapse thundered through the breach. The protective spell surrounding him shattered like glass, while the gateway he’d fought so hard to sustain tore itself apart. The Spellbinder was thrown back with great force by the unraveling planes.
The gateway collapsed. The endless columns of demons still trapped within the Abyss vanished as the crumbling void swallowed them whole. What had moments before been an army beyond counting was reduced to the scattering brigades that already crossed into the world of the living before the breach sealed itself shut.
Veera understood immediately what’d happened. He felt it deep within his soul. Looking into the fading light beyond the dying gateway, he knew exactly what Banerjee had done. There’d be no reunion. No rescue. The realization struck him with crushing certainty. Those he loved had given everything they had to even the fight.
Veera lowered his head for a moment, mourning the loss. Then he raised it once more. The war was no longer about survival. It was about making certain their sacrifice had not been made in vain.
His voice lifted across the valley, calling out the warriors of the Light...
VEERA: Attack!
