Episode 120: Final Judgement

Written By Karl White

All eyes turned to the chrysalis holding whatever Kasson was turning into.

The metamorphosis to the Tenth State of demonhood was nearing its end. The cocoon continued to swell, towering to the size of a house. What had once been a membrane of blackened flesh had hardened into something resembling an armored carapace, its surface plated with overlapping ridges that flexed and shifted as though forged from living obsidian. Great fissures pulsed beneath its shell with veins of red light, illuminating the battlefield in slow, rhythmic flashes like the heartbeat of an ancient titan preparing to awaken. Something enormous moved inside.

Each subtle shift rippled across the valley like a tremor from the earth, sending cracks racing through the stone beneath the cocoon. The environment around it seemed to recoil from whatever was gestating inside. And the sounds...

Rolled across the air with such violence, like a primal declaration of wrath...and enough to make the hair on the back of your neck stand.

A fracture split across the front of the chrysalis. Then another. And another. The shell exploded outward. Shards of armored chitin erupted like artillery fire, sending warriors from both armies sprawling beneath the blast. A hurricane of black smoke and burning embers surged into the heavens, blotting out what little daylight remained. For several long seconds, nothing could be seen.

Then, an immense silhouette emerged from within the storm. It towered over the battlefield. A colossal mass of living darkness whose form refused to obey the laws of flesh. Shadow streamed continuously from its body, folding over itself in dense, shifting layers as though countless unseen limbs were forever emerging, only to sink once more into the endless black from which they came.

No one could see it clearly. From every vantage point, its proportions shifted into impossible shapes the mind instinctively rejected, as though reality itself could not decide what stood before it. The only constant was its eyes...two deep crimson lights burning within the void, fixed upon the world with the silent certainty of a living nightmare. Kasson was gone and what stood before them was terror personified -- he’d become The Behemoth.

The creature’s head moved from side to side, searching, looking for someone...

Ren charged first. The samurai vampire crossed the valley in a blur, his katana flashing towards the monster before most could even follow his movement. But as the Behemoth cast its crimson stare upon Ren, the warrior stopped instantly. Invisible chains of darkness wrapped themselves around his body, locking every muscle in place until he stood frozen.

Heng Shao tried to save his friend. He blurred around the Behemoth, attempting to disrupt the dark forces it was commanding. But the brute caught him effortlessly...then flung Heng Shao towards the horizon. The monk vanished completely from sight.

The Order of Wormwood unleashed volley after volley of magic blasts. The barrage engulfed the Behemoth in an explosion, lighting the battlefield like a sunrise. When the smoke cleared...the creature was gone.

An instant later, the Behemoth materialized behind the magicians. One sweeping arm tore through their ranks, scattering bodies across the valley, while another smashed the remaining force to bits.

Kharos and the Seraphblades moved together. Dozens of celestial warriors became streaks of living light, their holy weapons coming at the Behemoth from every direction.

The thunder rang at the assault. Yet every hit passed through the dark air. Their weapons unable to harm what stood before them. The paladins broke away, ascending once more into the heavenly realm to regroup.

Veera tried to use his magic to strike, but his body refused. Joseph's stolen power churned violently within him, flooding his spirit with unimaginable strength while leaving his mortal form utterly exhausted. Every attempt to help threatened to tear him apart from the inside. He could only watch.

That's when Flora Mae called out…

FLORA MAE: Nightwardens!

A barrage of gunfire rained around the Behemoth from every direction as the remaining ‘Wardens advanced without hesitation. But the bullets did little more than leave glowing scars before disappearing beneath waves of living shadow. The monster barely acknowledged them. Its roar alone threw mortals from their feet. But it’s focus was dead set on Flora Mae. And it began moving towards her...

Sara Ivy stepped in the way. The battlefield grew strangely still. She possessed the power of all the elements, but she knew employing them separately wasn’t going to work. She drew a calming breath, and reached inside herself for something deeper. This was a moment she’d been moving toward since the night Thomas Crowley changed her life forever.

There was a time Sara feared what she was becoming more than anything else. Every surge of emotion or feeling threatened to awaken the werewolf hiding inside, and she spent years trying to deny it. Becoming a Child of Nature stole a life she thought she was meant to have. So Sara did everything in her power to bury her affliction.

But suffering has a way of revealing truths comfort never can. It was a long road, but Sara came to understand the wolf had never been her enemy, but a strength she could lean on. An instinct to follow. It was nature itself refusing to bow before evil. And the curse became the very foundation upon which she rebuilt herself.

For years she trained without rest, mastering not only the command of all of her elemental powers, but the untamed force raging within her soul. The frightened young woman who once fled from darkness was gone.

In her place stood someone who understood that true strength was not measured by power alone...but by choosing what that power would be used for.

As the Behemoth advanced, the air cooled around Sara and the earth trembled. Clouds spiraled overhead as oceans answered from thousands of miles away. Mountains groaned. Winds howled. Lightning awoke from within the sky, while fire erupted from broken fissures beneath the battlefield. Sound waves lifted Sara off the ground. Every force that shaped the natural world answered her call. Not separately, but together. Sara wasn’t commanding a storm, she was becoming one. A Tempest...

She unleashed everything. The Behemoth disappeared beneath an onslaught powerful enough to reshape continents. And for the first time...it faltered. Driven backwards by the fury of every element united as one, as even the Behemoth's formless power couldn’t escape the wrath of nature Sara Ivy had become.

Beneath the storm, Veera felt it. It was now or never, he had to act. Forcing his exhausted body to obey, his new powers burst forth. His mind’s eye, sharper than it had ever been, pierced the impossible darkness of the Behemoth until he found Kasson’s old shape buried deep within the shadows of the beast. Veera grabbed hold, tearing away the unimaginable torrent of power sustaining the monstrous form.

Fighting against two fronts at once, the Behemoth reeled beneath the assault. But the pure evil the beast was made of fought back, raging against Veera's grip as though the darkness itself understood extinction was coming. Planting his feet against shattered earth, Veera endured. The combined power he’d taken from Joseph surged through him, refined by his own spirit, he was all-powerful.

The endless sea of living shadow enveloping the Behemoth began unravelling. Smoke peeled away. Darkness shrank with every heartbeat as Veera tore at the impossible power sustaining the creature. It’s roars became screams. And a single deafening cry echoed across the battlefield as the Behemoth finally came apart. Its colossal form collapsed like a dying, dark star. And from within the withered shell, a body fell to the ruined battlefield -- Kasson.

But the darkness wasn’t yet dead. The shattered remains of the Behemoth convulsed across the valley like living oil, writhing in a frantic attempt to rebuild what’d been lost. Sara gave it no opportunity. Driving both hands forward, she called upon every force she held and the fury of the natural world descended as one. The remnants of the Behemoth vanished beneath the full fury of the Tempest, consumed so completely that nothing remained.

Silence settled. The Behemoth was gone. The storm that had shaken Creation dissolved into drifting rain, and for the first time since the Absolution had begun, the clash of Light and Dark quieted.

Across the scarred landscape, warriors stood battered and bloodied, scarcely believing what they’d witnessed. Satan's greatest weapon had fallen. Against every circumstance, the forces of Light endured. The war was over...or so they believed.

Amid the shattered earth, Kasson lay broken. The impossible power that elevated him beyond demonhood had been stripped away, leaving behind little more than a ruined shell. Yet a smile spread across his face. Defeat held no fear for him, because survival had never been the objective. His gaze drifted beyond the victors towards the distant hill where Satan continued to watch in silence. Summoning the last of his strength, Kasson called out...

KASSON: The Redeemer, the Nexus of Life must be destroyed!

He pointed at Flora Mae...And for one terrible instant, confusion swept through the battlefield.

Then, understanding followed close behind. The Dark could still prevail if the Seventh and final Procession was carried out. And she was it.

Very few knew the truth. Bernard Watkins knew his daughter had been chosen, which was why, with his dying breath, he called upon Kharos to save her. It was why the Paladin appeared throughout her life whenever death reached for her.

Broderick Zayne uncovered the same secret and entrusted it to the one man he believed worthy of carrying such a burden.

Through the noble bloodlines of the Nightwardens, Flora Mae had been born as something extraordinary. She was a chosen soul, a living embodiment of mankind's promise and the point upon which the balance of existence had quietly come to rest. She was the Nexus of Life. And should she fall, the Seventh Procession would be complete, and nothing would remain to prevent the Dark from ascending.

Satan moved. There was no flash of light or burst of flame. One moment he stood atop the distant ridge overlooking the valley. The next, he was behind Flora Mae, as though distance itself surrendered before its creator. His presence eclipsed everything around him. Even after the fall of the Abyss and the rise of the Behemoth, there remained something uniquely terrifying about standing in the shadow of the First Rebel. This wasn’t another demon. He was something ancient and absolute. He reached forward with quiet certainty toward the one soul upon whom all creation now rested.

The sky answered first. Golden radiance tore through the clouds as Kharos descended once more, a fiery axe already sweeping downward to intercept the killing blow. Yet in that very same instant, another figure moved...

Though the Behemoth's dark magic held him motionless before, Ren burst forward in a single explosive surge as Broderick Zayne's final instructions echoed within his mind. Protect her. Whatever the cost.

Ren crossed the battlefield faster than mortal sight could follow, placing himself between Satan and Flora Mae. Katana in hand, he knew its weight like a fingerprint. The imperfections worn into its grip. The precise curve of the blade. Like instinct, he knew the exact angle and reactionary strength needed to cut nearly anything in half. Drawing the sword back to an inflection point, the samurai struck with absolute conviction, driving the blade into the heart of the being before him. And steel pierced something it was never meant to touch.

Just then, everything stopped. There was no explosion. No triumphant declaration. The instant steel passed through flesh, the world simply ceased. Rain froze in midair. Flames became motionless sculptures. Every warrior, every drifting particle of ash halted. Time no longer flowed. Sound didn’t exist. Reality itself had paused.

Only Death remained. His presence required no announcement, for existence itself yielded to his authority. His ancient gaze passed over Satan, then Ren, measuring the weight of the choices that led to this singular moment. When he finally spoke, his voice carried neither anger nor mercy.

DEATH: The Processions existed as unbreakable, hidden from every soul, so neither Light nor Dark could shape destiny to its own design. Not secrets to be uncovered, but safeguards to preserve the balance of creation. Yet that balance was broken long before this battle began.

Death's eyes settled upon Kasson.

DEATH: Darkness corrupted destiny. You sought knowledge forbidden. In the form of smoke, you whispered into Fate’s ear, and in his exhaustion, he surrendered what no one was ever meant to know.

Since mankind had been granted free-will, Fate labored without rest, endlessly writing and rewriting the destinies of countless billions of lives as every choice reshaped the future.

As a smoke demon, Kasson somehow found his way into a forbidden corner of the universe, where the weary primordial presence toiled alone. The burden of charting destiny had become greater than any one being was ever meant to bear. And worn beneath the impossible weight of everything yet to come, Fate abandoned his sacred responsibility and revealed the truth of the Processions to Kasson. From that instant forward, every tragedy that followed ceased to be coincidence. From Reginald and Orem Black to the creation of Kasson’s own offspring, every manipulation had been orchestrated by a demon who knew precisely where destiny would bend.

DEATH: And Universal Law was violated as flesh dared strike the one entity whose end cannot be permitted.

Universal Law forbid the destruction of a being such as Satan because he was more than an inhabitant of existence. He was a foundational component of the cosmic order. To destroy one like him would leave an absence creation was never designed to accommodate. The law didn’t say such beings couldn’t be killed, only that they must not be.

With that, the balance failed in both directions. Darkness corrupted destinies meant to remain beyond influence...While those fighting for life had been driven to violate an unbreakable order in their desperation to survive. The design of life had been compromised, so Death alone possessed the authority to decide what remained.

Death’s look lifted beyond the Last Valley, as though staring back across time, over the entirety of human existence, to the first dawn...Then, he rendered his judgement.

DEATH: This age shall end. Not in victory, nor defeat...but in renewal.

Death watched mankind from the beginning, witnessing every cruelty and failure, but also the extraordinary beauty found within such fragile and fleeting lives. Human beings loved, dreamed, sacrificed, and endured, never knowing how much time they’d be given. Their paths could change with a single choice, and even when destiny seemed certain, they remained capable of becoming something no one had foreseen. To Death, there was something remarkable in that. Life was imperfect because it was uncertain, and precious because it couldn’t last forever.

Rather than bring the grand experiment to an end, the clock was set back to the beginning. Fate was removed, his burden passed to another, and the Processions were rewritten for different souls to one day inherit. New safeguards were woven into creation so no single will could ever again manipulate destiny as Kasson had. The old age came to its end, and another quietly began.

For all mankind’s faults, Death believed life was worth preserving. In the absence of the divine, he quietly watched over it, revealing the future when necessary and placing champions in its path when the balance demanded them.

And so the story of mankind was allowed to continue. The ancient war didn’t end that day. It merely slipped back into the shadows, where it’s remained ever since, unseen, quietly shaping the course of history beyond the reach of mortal eyes. Such is the nature of Legends of the Night...for what history forgets, still leaves its mark upon the world.

THE END.
